Performance Classes

Performance classes are held on Saturday afternoons.  Each class will be once a month.  Students play a prepared piece in front of their peers followed by group discussion.

Performance Class ages 9-12

Students perform in front of their peers. Content includes performance practice, stage presence, and audience etiquette. Students also learn how to listen critically for pedaling, phrasing, dynamics, and more. Students also learn how to evaluate technique.

Performers are instructed to inform the audience about their piece before playing. This includes providing the background and meaning of their piece, information about the composer, and discussing the form of the piece. This preparation for an “informance” helps students present educated performances.

These classes also include aural skills training. Students learn to identify a wide variety of sounds based on my own curriculum. They also learn to play back these sounds and quiz their peers. These activities include group games with prizes!

Performance Class ages 13-18

Students perform in front of their peers in a positive and encouraging environment. This class promotes playing in front of an audience on a regular basis so that performing may become more routine and less of a challenge. Performers are expected to be knowledgeable about their piece so that they can answer basic questions about the composer and background of their piece.

Students are guided with specific items to listen for in a performance, encouraging critical thinking.

Positive comments and constructive criticism follows each performance
